Just looking at some normal cars in the same price range, and how that "range" changes dramatically with taxes. *shakes head*

That depends where you live. Some places base it on CO2, others on engine capacity. Some places have an annual tax, some have a registration tax, some of us are lucky enough to have to pay both.

This is in Belgium, and it's both. The annual tax is based upon engine size. The 1-time registration is based on engine power and age, and the CO2 tax is straight against the CO2 emissions.

wowsers, i paid 26 USD to register my 4 liter 14 mpg SUV for a year, and to transfer the title and taxes, it was 150 USD, seems like a lot more in the EU.

It was certainly sticker shock. I wanted to bring my E39 M5 which I owned back in the USA over. I'm glad I didn't. It would have been > $6,000 to register.
